This is a great article, published by Plant Therapy on safety when considering ingestion of essential oils (EOs). There has been a lot of recent debate on this topic. This is an older article but they brought it to the forefront, as it still applies to todays questions. Is it safe? Yes? No? Sometimes? Maybe? It's important to know the facts.
Most use essential oils for a healthier alternative to pharmaceuticals. Let's make sure that the essntial oils that are being ingested are a healthy option.
As a clinical aromatherapy student, I am learning that there are many components and factors to consider when ingesting essential oils such as the chemical composition of the oils, health issues/illness, emotional/energetic qualities, everyday uses, safety data, drug interactions and so on.
Essential oils may be safely used internally if you have appropriate medical guidance from a trained Clinical Aromatherapist who understands pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, appropriate formulation techniques, and the safety issues related to each route of application.
If you are not under the care of a certified professional, educate yourself as much as possible and safely use essential oils as intended. For health benefits through inhalation and/or topically.
